History
Our Story
The Haynie Building was built in 1883 by Charles R. Haynie, former Treasurer of Bastrop, and his wife, Alice Haynie. Not only was C.R. Haynie an active participant in the development of Bastrop, Haynie's two uncles were closely connected with the early history of Texas--one being killed in the Fannin Massacre at Goliad and the other killed at the Alamo with Crockett, Travis, and Bowie.
An unusual arrangement resulted in the sale of the second floor to the Gambol Masonic Lodge until 1976, while the first floor began operating as a grocery and market, followed by numerous changes over the years.

The second floor now houses The Charles On Main, hosting vacation rentals, while the first floor is home to The Branding Shop and Simply Sweet Cupcakes, a Main Street storefront bakery, as well as rearfacing offices including that of Texas State Representative Stan Gerdes and other local businesses. Due to its architecture, it remains one of the most interesting buildings located downtown.

The Museum and Visitor Center of Bastrop hosts a multitude of events and interactive activities, such as the Walking Tour Guide and the City Scavenger Hunt.
